For me, it comes down to an overlay of (in order of importance) 1. the platforms your ideal customers already use 2. your current top platforms, i.t.o. number of followers, and 3. the platforms you are comfortable with or can get comfortable with. For most brands this would be Facebook and YouTube (thanks, Jared), but face it, if you do not want to be on video, it will not be sustainable to keep a consistent presence on YouTube. I would have done better had I started with YouTube and either Twitter or LinkedIn. Therefore, when I have additional sustainable capacity, I will add YouTube.
